ABOUT HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC

Long before European settlers arrived, Hilton Head Island was home to Native American tribes, particularly ancestors of the Yemassee people. They lived seasonally on the island, relying on fishing, hunting, and farming. Spanish explorers made contact in the early 1500s, but it wasn’t until 1663 that Captain William Hilton officially charted the area and named it “Hilton’s Headland,” a name that would eventually become Hilton Head.
In the mid-20th century, Hilton Head began a transformation. Initially, the island was used for timber harvesting, but that soon changed with the vision of developer Charles Fraser. In the 1950s and ‘60s, Fraser led the creation of Sea Pines Plantation—one of the first eco-planned resort communities in the U.S. His approach to development emphasized harmony with nature, including the preservation of trees, the limitation of signage, and the maintenance of open green spaces. This model inspired future growth across the island.
Today, Hilton Head Island is famous for its outdoor activities. Visitors enjoy pristine beaches, over 100 miles of bike paths, kayaking, fishing, and birdwatching in protected wildlife areas. The island also boasts more than 30 golf courses, with Harbour Town Golf Links hosting the annual RBC Heritage PGA Tournament. The Harbour Town Lighthouse, a symbol of the island, offers panoramic views and historical exhibits. For cultural exploration, sites such as Mitchelville Freedom Park and the Coastal Discovery Museum offer insight into the island’s complex past.
