The area now known as Richmond Hill was originally inhabited by the Guale people, a Native American tribe that lived along the Georgia coast. European settlement began in the 1700s when British colonists established rice and indigo plantations along the Ogeechee River. In the 19th century, the area was part of the extensive coastal plantation system that relied on enslaved labor. One of the most prominent plantations was Cherry Hill Plantation, which would later become central to the town’s development and identity.

Richmond Hill is surrounded by lush coastal landscapes, rivers, and marshes, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Ogeechee River offers excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, and kayaking. Local parks, such as J.F. Gregory Park, feature walking trails, playgrounds, and host community events throughout the year. Just a short drive away, residents and visitors can explore the Fort McAllister State Historic Park, home to well-preserved Confederate earthworks and scenic views along the river.
