A Little Hardeeville History
The first European settlement near here was Purrysburg, a Swiss Huguenot colony founded on the Savannah River in 1732. It didn’t last. Much later, Isaac Hardee settled the area, and his son Whyte Hardee opened a depot and store on the Charleston and Savannah Railway. That stop became Hardee’s Station, then Hardeeville, incorporated in 1911.
Lumber built the town. The Argent Lumber Company ran one of the largest logging operations in the world here, and its Engine Number 7 still sits on display at Hardeeville Veterans Park. Today the growth comes from new neighborhoods instead of timber, and Hardeeville has been one of the fastest-growing cities in South Carolina.
